Hammer says Carlsen should be sanctioned in live Norwegian TV program https://www.chessdom.com/hammer-says-carlsen-should-be-sanctioned-in-live-norwegian-tv-program/ Mon, 19 Sep 2022 18:43:01 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=82555 19-year-old Hans Niemann today AGAIN defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, in the 6th round of the Julius Baer Generation Cup, as Magnus Carlsen resigned his game in the second move. Carlsen went offline as soon as he resigned. Replay the game Hans Niemann – Magnus Carlsen here

Norwegian Chess grandmaster and a member of the Norwegian National Chess Team – Jon Ludvig Hammer criticized Carlsen in live Norwegian TV program: “It’s completely unacceptable behavior to lose on purpose. It’s the most unsportsmanlike you can do in a competitive sport“, tweets Tarjei J. Svensen.

New: The Carlsen – Niemann conflict is more recent than everyone thinks?

After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament without detailed explanations. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social media and the controversy over the Niemann – Carlsen case is not stopping. While Niemann spoke on the case on several occasions, the World Chess Champion did not have any public announcement since then.

Susan Polgar on Carlsen’s resignation against Niemann: Definitely a protest move!

Chess Olympiad 2022 – Round 3 report https://www.chessdom.com/chess-olympiad-2022-round-3-report/ Sun, 31 Jul 2022 21:46:07 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=80574 Having the World Champion in your team doesn’t guarantee the win. In their match-up against Italy, captain Loek van Wely’s strategy was clear:  neutralize Carlsen on board one – Vocaturo played a solid exchange Caro-Kann and achieved a well-deserved draw – and take their chances on the other three boards. Read more: Italy makes a major upset defeating Norway in the R3 of the 2022 Chess Olympiad

His strategy paid off. With two wins on the lower boards – Lodici and Sonis took down Hammer and Christiansen respectively – Italy pulled off the main surprise of the round, defeating seed three by 2.5-1.5. A huge result for the Mediterranean’s, who were extremely happy in the postgame interview. Replay the match here

Meanwhile, all three Indian teams won their matches. India A defeated Greece by a clear 3-1 score, with Harikrishna and Arjun Erigaisi as local heroes of the day, while India B, filled to the brim with top youngsters, destroyed Switzerland by 4-0. Team C took down Iceland also by a 3-1 score. India B now leads the tournament as they are the only team to have won all twelve of their games.

Playing third board for India B this afternoon, RameshBabu Praggnanandhaa, wriggled out of a totally lost position against seasoned swiss GM Yannick Pelletier. Without giving up, the teenager continued to pose problems, making it difficult for his opponent to find a clear winning line. Eventually, Pelletier, short on time, lost on move 67. Demonstrating once again his learning mentality, Prag declared: “I have played badly, and this point doesn’t give me any joy. I struggled throughout this game in a bad position and I feel sorry for my opponent”. In a more pragmatic fashion, his team B captain R B Ramesh said “In any professional sport one has to be ready any type of position and situations. It’s actually better that this situation has happened sooner than later in the event”. Replay the games here

Team USA continued their winning streak in round three against Georgia, notching up a final 3-1 score, thanks to Levon Aronian’s masterful exploit of his space advantage against a tough opponent. His teammate San Shankland also slowly but surely pushed his opponent off the board, scoring his second win of the series, while both Fabiano Caruana and Lenier Dominguez kept their opponent’s at bay with the black pieces.

It’s already twelve years since Caruana last came to India: “It’s good to be in India. I don’t have the chance to come very often to this country; my last time was 12 years ago. It’s very good to be here! It’s a beautiful country.” See the rest of his postgame interview below.

Twenty teams still have a 100% score and will face each other in tomorrow’s fourth round match-ups. All encounters will surely be fast and furious but special attention should be paid to France-India 1 on match one and USA-Uzbekistan on match two. Uzbekistan is a very young but very strong team, still undefeated on all five boards. India 3-Spain on match three will be a huge test for both teams, while India 2 will have a chance to put Italy to a stop after their stunning victory today over Carlsen’s Norway.  Round 4 pairings / Round 3 results (open section) / Round 3 results (women’s section)

FIDE silent on the creation of another “world championship” https://www.chessdom.com/fide-silent-on-the-creation-of-another-world-championship/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 11:20:14 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=75464 For many days after the appearance of another “world champion” title, the governing body of chess FIDE is silent on the issue. FIDE’s silence has spurred into multiple theories ranging from FIDE’s looming bankruptcy to direct correlations with the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Read more: “Chess.com” world championship might open up a Pandora’s box / Video announcement of the “Chess.com world championship” / FIDE silent on the creation of another “world championship”

If FIDE is NOT aware of the new “world champion” title

It is hard to believe that FIDE does not know about the issue. After all, the world chess governing body looks very active on all fronts. So active, that it even gives basic rules explanation to random Twitter users. But let’s assume for a second that they really do not know. This means they should really improve on defending the players, the history of chess, and in particular the flagship event of FIDE and chess in general.

If FIDE is aware of the new “world champion” title

There are multiple rumors that FIDE knows very well what is happening, including a tweet from FIDE Vice President Nigel Short himself and another from FIDE Director General Emil Sutovsky who joined a related discussion.

Besides criticizing FIDE’s silence, Peter Heine Nielsen punctually pointed out several problems for FIDE.

On top of the problems listed by Peter Heine Nielsen, many players that participate in the FIDE World Championship cycle are in check, as participating in the new championship will be a direct breach of their contract. The silence of FIDE just adds to the confusion. As R. Giskar Reventlo put it, “I wonder if the average chess public will know the difference between “FIDE World Champion” and “Chess.com World Champion”. My guess is this leads to some confusion.” to which AbuHuj replied , “the confusion is exactly what chesscom wants”

Questions remain

The secrecy around the relationship and contracts between FIDE and Chess.com only adds to the problems that another “world champion” title can bring. As FIDE lost most of its sponsors due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, is FIDE financially against the ropes? Do players have to worry about the stability of the FIDE World Championship cycle? Why such news appears only months before the elections during the Chess Olympiad 2022? Is there behind the scenes contract between FIDE and Chess.com? Has the General Assembly approved such a deal? Will FIDE take action and defend the name of its flagship event?
