Organized by the European Chess Union, it is one of the major events in the European calendar.

The first historic champion is the Natalia Zhukova (Ukraine). She won the first ever EIWCC in Batumi, Georgia. Later she repeated this success in Chavki, Georgia, in 2015. Other double title holders are Kateryna Lahno, Tatiana Kosintseva, and Pia Cramling. The record for most titles is currently held by Valentina Gunia with 3 trophies.

The reigning champion as of March 2025 is Ulviyya Fataliyeva, who will be defending her title in the European Women Chess Championship 2025 in Rhodes, Greece.
