GM Romain Edouard: Mamedov’s decision was brave, but Magnus was not making fun of anyone #TweetOftheDay https://www.chessdom.com/gm-romain-edouard-mamedovs-decision-was-brave-but-magnus-was-not-making-fun-of-anyone-tweetoftheday/ Tue, 18 Oct 2022 09:20:33 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=84102 Just weeks after Magnus Carlsen shocked the chess world after resigning against Hans Niemann on the move 2 during the Julius Baer Generation Cup, the Azerbaijani grandmaster Rauf Mamedov had the same reaction during the Titled Tuesday played on October 11th, on chess.com. Mamedov had white pieces and started with 1.e4, when Carlsen answered with Borg Defense – 1…g5. Rauf decided to resign.

In the interview for sports.ru, Mamedov explained that he didn’t want to allow Magnus to make fun of him and revealed that he almost got banned from chess.com after the incident. Commenting on Mamedov’s decision, Ukrainian grandmaster Mikhail Golubev said he liked the game and that maybe Rauf’s resignation will inspire Magnus to change his repertoire for the Titled Tuesday tournaments.

French grandmaster Romain Edouard has another take on the story as he believes Magnus was not making fun of anyone, but just having fun himself: “Brave decision [by Rauf], but it seems clear to me that Magnus was not making fun of anyone, just having fun himself“. See the tweet below

Rauf Mamedov: I almost got banned from chess.com for resigning against Magnus Carlsen https://www.chessdom.com/rauf-mamedov-i-almost-got-banned-from-chess-com-for-resigning-against-magnus-carlsen/ Mon, 17 Oct 2022 23:10:59 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=84071 Just weeks after Magnus Carlsen shocked the chess world after resigning against Hans Niemann on the move 2 during the Julius Baer Generation Cup, the Azerbaijani grandmaster Rauf Mamedov had the same reaction during the Titled Tuesday played on October 11th, on chess.com. Mamedov had white pieces and started with 1.e4, when Carlsen answered with Borg Defense – 1…g5. Rauf decided to resign.

In the interview for sports.ru, Mamedov revealed he almost got banned from the platform for resigning on the second move: “Fillimonov from Crestbook wrote to me asking why I left the tournament. I answered that because of 1…g5. And on Wednesday morning the journalist got in touch and told me that I’d almost been banned [from chess.com] after this incident on Chess.com“.

Rauf explained that he didn’t want to continue the game after seeing Carlsen’s 1…g5 as he didn’t want to allow Magnus to make fun of him: “Titled Tuesday gathers strong lineups, all people come here to play chess, maybe someone will make money. And then – 1.e4 g5! Well, I decided not to continue … If you come to mock us, then without me. I don’t think I’m right and so on, but I definitely don’t want to participate in something like that. (…) The move 1…g5 in a prize tournament, moreover when the World Champion makes it, is wrong… There are always more expectations from a game against Carlsen than anyone else, but instead of that, mockery“.

Commenting on Mamedov’s decision to resign on the second move, Ukrainian grandmaster Mikhail Golubev said he liked the game and that maybe Rauf’s resignation will inspire Magnus to change his repertoire for the Titled Tuesday tournaments. See the tweet below

Chess.com’s Chief Chess Officer Daniel Rensch and Chess.com’s CEO Erik Allebest today published the “community update” on the Carlsen – Niemann case. They answered some of the questions which were raised after chess.com’s investigation and announced to share their more concrete next steps with the community.

We imagine that most of you, like us, have had more friends than ever who are outside the chess community come and ask you about chess, cheating, Hans, Magnus, and everything else that is going on. Every news outlet on the planet seems to have written a “take” on chess in the last few weeks. It’s been a bewildering time for chess fans and our community. So, as an update to our recent report and the events going on in the chess community, we (Danny and Erik) wanted to take the time and answer some of the questions we see being asked. We appreciate your voice and your questions, and while we know that the opinions in the chess community are divided on many of these topics, we are doing our best to protect and grow the game.“, reads the update. Rauf Mamedov resigned his Round 10 game against Magnus Carlsen on the second move and did not play the last 11th round of the tournament. Mamedov had white pieces and started with 1.e4, when Carlsen answered with Borg Defense – 1…g5. Rauf decided to resign.

Magnus Carlsen won the Late Titled Tuesday yesterday scoring 9.5/11 points, with 9 victories, a draw against Dmitry Andreikin, and suffered a loss to Turkish grandmaster Sanal Vahap. Two weeks ago, Magnus was unhappy for having black pieces in 7 out of 11 Early Titled Tuesday games. He tweeted that he will cancel his diamond membership and never come back to chess.com, but a few hours later he joined the Late Titled Tuesday confirming that the tweet was a joke.

Daniel Rensch explains why chess.com didn’t ban Joachim Nilsen who admitted to cheating in PRO Chess League https://www.chessdom.com/daniel-rensch-explains-why-chess-com-didnt-ban-joachim-nilsen-who-admitted-to-cheating-in-pro-chess-league/ Fri, 07 Oct 2022 20:24:31 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83610 The President of the Norwegian Chess Federation Joachim Nilsen resigned from his position today, one day after he admitted to cheating on chess.com. Nilsen confessed to NRK that he cheated online during the PRO Chess League 2016/2017, as he received outside help from a person who was hidden in the room while he played for the Norwegian team. However, Nilsen was not banned from chess.com for violating their fair-play rules at the time.

Chess.com’s Chief Chess Officer Daniel Rensch explained that chess.com did not close Nilsen’s account as there was a 1/1000 chance of being wrong: “Imagine that his level of play can be achieved by a player of his strength only one out of 1,000 times. That sounds incredibly improbable. Now consider that every month thousands of titled players play on Chess.com. If we closed accounts based on a 1/1000 chance of being wrong (false positive), that would mean that every month we could potentially close several titled player accounts unfairly. So, should we have closed Nilsen’s account even though adjusting our standards might result in some accounts being unfairly closed?“. See the complete statement below

Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias and the topic of cheating in chess is the top news in mass medias ever since. As Norwegian government broadcasting company NRK reports, the President of the Norwegian Chess Federation IM Joachim Birger Nilsen admitted he cheated online during the Pro Chess League played on chess.com in 2016/2017 season. Nilsen confessed he received outside help from a person who was hidden in the room while he played. It was an assisted game where I received help during the game, and that is not allowed. You have to play alone, without help“, said Nilsen to NRK.

As Tarjei J. Svensen writes, there are several calls for Nilsen’s resignation from the president’s position in the Norwegian Chess Federation.

Reactions to chess.com’s findings about Hans Niemann https://www.chessdom.com/reactions-to-chess-coms-findings-about-hans-niemann/ Tue, 04 Oct 2022 22:12:53 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83434 After 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, the World Chess Champion decided to withdraw from the event. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias and the “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy is the top news in mass medias ever since. Hans Niemann confessed cheating online in random games on chess.com, but he claimed that he never cheated over-the-board. Chess.com removed Niemann from the platform, explaining their decision with the official statement, and announced to publish their findings on the Carlsen – Niemann case. The Wall Street Journal exclusively published the results of chess.com’s investigation on the Carlsen – Niemann case in which is claimed that Hans Niemann cheated in more than 100 online games on the platform, including multiple money-prize tournaments. A few hours later, chess.com published the complete 72-page report which includes screenshots of a confident email conversation between Daniel Rensch and Hans Niemann in which Niemann admitted cheating.

Hikaru Nakamura commented on chess.com’s report during his live stream, saying that we now have a big drama, while the social medias got overwhelmed with reactions to shocking news. See some of the reactions below:

Hikaru Nakamura on chess.com’s findings about Hans Niemann: This is the big drama https://www.chessdom.com/hikaru-nakamura-on-chess-coms-findings-about-hans-niemann-this-is-the-big-drama/ Tue, 04 Oct 2022 21:56:01 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83432 The Wall Street Journal today published an exclusive article with the results of chess.com’s investigation on the Carlsen – Niemann case. Chess.com’s 72-page report discloses that Hans Niemann likely cheated in more than 100 online games, sharing the list of tournaments and number of games in which Niemann likely received illegal assistance. “This is the big drama“, commented Hikaru Nakamura on chess.com’s findings during his live stream.

As chess.com haven’t yet published the 72-page report, Nakamura said that he finds it hard to believe there is not going to be a public release of the complete investigation report: “I would be shocked if the 72-page report is not dropped. Looking at these facts that he (Hans Niemann) has cheated in these tournaments – three Titled Tuesdays; to me the Titled Tuesdays are bad enough as is, but then when you see that he cheated in PRO chess league as well, there are 32 games and he likely cheated in 12, this is very tough. (…) I believe that they (chess.com) feel confident if this goes to court, that they would be able to prove statistically that is the case. After The Wall Street Journal report, I find it impossible to believe that there is not going to be a public release to this report“.

Hikaru also noted that it is questionable what will happen at the US Chess Championship which starts tomorrow in Saint Louis Chess Club and where Hans Niemann should participate as the 8th-seeded player. See the complete video below
