Nico Rosberg played against the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen’s computer bot that simulates Carlsen’s play when he was aged 10. Rosberg had two minutes on the clock and lost to 10-year-old Magnus Carlsen bot on time after 18 played moves. Julius Baer donated 100$ per move (a total of 1800$) to “Chess in Slums” organization which helps youngsters in slum communities to realize their full potential through chess training.

Nico Rosberg revealed that he is an avid chess player and that he often played chess with his physical trainer, Michael Schumacher and his other F1 teammates. Earlier this year, we could’ve seen F1’s Mick Schumacher enjoying a chess game with the team of Haas, and it is not the first time we see popular sportsmen keeping their minds sharp by playing chess. A few to mention: Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz is using chess to up his game / Novak Djokovic plays chess with Boris Becker / Basketball NBA star Shane Battier / PAOK FC football players taking chess lessons

Magnus Carlsen wins the first match in the Julius Baer Generation Cup final https://www.chessdom.com/magnus-carlsen-wins-the-first-match-in-the-julius-baer-generation-cup-final/ Sat, 24 Sep 2022 18:31:28 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=82954 After the exciting semi-finals of the Julius Baer Generation Cup, World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and 19-year-old Indian prodigy Arjun Erigaisi advanced to the finals which are played over two days with two 4-game rapid matches.

Magnus Carlsen convincingly won the first final match with a final result 2.5-0.5. Carlsen had a more active position with whites in the first game and continued adding pressure on his younger opponent. Arjun Erigaisi made a crucial mistake with 24…Nf8? as the evaluation engine bar showed a decisive advantage for the World Champion. The rest was technique and a beautiful mate net around Erigaisi’s king. With an aggressive approach in the second game, Carlsen scored another point though it seemed that Arjun stabilized his position for a moment. 27.Be3?? led the Indian grandmaster straight to another loss.

Erigaisi needed to win on demand in the third game to keep the first final match ongoing while the World Champion needed only half a point to score first and important victory in the finals. The former had a more pleasant position, but it wasn’t enough. Erigaisi terribly blundered in the endgame ending up in a losing position, but Magnus missed a way to win. The game finished in a draw and Carlsen took the victory in the first set of the finals. “I am far from satisfied with my play. I think there were some pretty bad moments today“, said Carlsen in the post-match interview.

S1: Magnus Carlsen vs Vincent Keymer 3-1

World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen defeated Vincent Keymer with a convincing 3-1 score. The first two games finished in a draw as Vincent Keymer played brilliantly. Carlsen won the third game since Vincent missed the only move to save the endgame with a pawn down. 81…Nc6?? was a terrible mistake, while 81…Nf5! could’ve saved the result for the 17-year-old German grandmaster. Keymer needed to win the fourth game to stay in the match and schedule the tiebreaks, but Magnus took all the initiative from the early part of the game and eventually scored. “I was very impressed with his play, he is very very strong. As you can see from the end of the game 3 and the game four, he still has some challenges with experience and practical play, but basically, he is a very good player”, said Magnus in the post-match interview.

S2: Arjun Erigaisi vs Le Quang Liem 4-2

The second finalist of the Julius Baer Generation Cup was determined in the tiebreak mini-match as the rapid portion finished with a 2-2 result. After the first game of the rapid part finished in a draw, Arjun Erigaisi took the lead as he defeated the Vietnamese grandmaster in the second game with whites. The third game finished in a draw and just when it looked that Erigaisi will get to the finals, Liem Le won the fourth game on demand and brought the match to the tiebreaks. The Indian 19-year-old crashed his opponent in the blitz match winning both of the games and taking his seat in the Finals against World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. Erigaisi said in the post-match interview that qualifying to the finals means a lot to him. “It will be very interesting to play against Magnus Carlsen and I think I will learn a lot from it“, added Arjun.

The final match of the Julius Baer Generation Cup will be played over two days 24-25 September, with two 4-game rapid matches. If the result is 1-1 after two played matches, the winner of the event will be determined in the playoffs. The play-off consists of 2 blitz games, followed by an Armageddon game if the score is 1-1.

Julius Baer Generation Cup – Knockout stage LIVE

Q1: Magnus Carlsen vs Levon Aronian 3-1

The match between the reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and World No 8 Levon Aronian started perfectly for the American. Aronian took the advantage in the first game with Black pieces after Carlsen’s blunder 31.Bc1? Levon struggled to prove the advantage in the Queens endgame but Magnus helped with 52.Kf2?? and resigned in the next move. World Chess Champion then stroke back winning three consecutive games and finishing the match with 3-1 result in his favor. “It was obviously a poor start, but with three games to go I only needed plus one to get to the tiebreaks, so I wasn’t quite panicking yet“, said Magnus after the match. On the other hand, Levon Aronian was disappointed: “I have to say it is a little bit disappointing. After I won the first game, I thought that match is in my hands“.

Q2: Arjun Erigaisi vs Christopher Yoo 3.5-2.5

A very exciting match between the Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi and the youngest participant of the Julius Baer Generation Cup – Christopher Yoo finished in blitz tiebreaks as the rapid portion of the match finished with 2-2 result. All four games of the rapid match were decisive as players used their White pieces for a full point. Erigaisi started in the same fashion with the blitz match and took a victory with Whites, holding a draw in the second blitz game to take the last seat for the semi-finals. “Last two times I got eliminated in the quarterfinals, so I am already happy with the semifinals this time. It will be a very interesting match against Le Quang Liem“, said Arjun in the post-match interview.

Q3: Hans Niemann vs Le Quang Liem 1.5-2.5

Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem defeated the American teenager Hans Niemann preventing another Carlsen – Niemann match to happen anytime soon. Liem Le started the match with a victory, but Niemann stayed in the race winning the second game. With the third game ending in a draw, any decisive result of the fourth game would name the semi-finalist of the Julius Baer Generation Cup. It was Liem Le who used the White pieces and finished the game in his favor with a perfect endgame technique. “It was an interesting match, but I could have finished it a bit earlier as I had a completely winning position in the second game“.

Q4: Praggnanandhaa – Vincent Keymer 1-3

Vincent Keymer prevailed in the clash of the 17-year-old grandmasters as he defeated Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa with a final 3-1 result. Keymer won the first game as Pragg didn’t realize the danger around his King and made a huge blunder with 39…R1a3 which cost him a point. The next two games finished in a draw, while Keymer again scored in the fourth round, this time having Black pieces. Vincent Keymer will meet World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the semi-finals and in the post-match interview said he looks very much forward to it: “Of course, it will be a very tough match, but I think having a chance to play Magnus in a match is already great and I will just try to enjoy as much as I can“.

Julius Baer Generation Cup Semi-finals pairings:

S1: Magnus Carlsen vs Vincent Keymer
S2: Le Quang Liem vs Arjun Erigaisi

The semi-finals will be played tomorrow, with the same system of play as in the quarterfinals. Four rapid matches should determine two finalists, and if the match finishes with 2-2 result, the tiebreak match will be decisive.

Anish Giri about the recent chess drama: It’s moving in circles a little bit https://www.chessdom.com/anish-giri-about-the-recent-chess-drama-its-moving-in-circles-a-little-bit/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 07:49:38 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=82800 Anish Giri did not qualify for the Julius Baer Generation Cup Knockout stage due to unfortunate results in the last round of the prelims. Giri won his last game against Arjun Erigaisi to score 21 points and it was almost certain he will take the seat for the Knockout. However,  Christopher Yoo and Levon Aronian took the last two Knockout spots thanks to better performance in direct encounters, while Giri finished the prelims in the 9th place.

Giri was disappointed not to qualify for the Knockout stage and said in the Day 4 interview: “Oh wow, this is so unfair. (…) I thought if I beat Arjun with Black, I should deserve qualification“. Answering if he will follow the chess drama around the Carlsen – Niemann case, Anish said: “No. I mean, it’s moving in circles a little bit. There is not much new and I’ve never read up anyway too much, it’s not so exciting. (…) I think I will once again try to find the right balance between working on chess, preparing for my next events, and also trying to find the rest. It is a constant struggle to find that right balance“. See the complete interview below

Susan Polgar: Sadly, the performances of other young talents are overshadowed https://www.chessdom.com/susan-polgar-sadly-the-performances-of-other-young-talents-are-overshadowed/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 06:34:41 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=82791 After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament without detailed explanations. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social media and the controversy over the Niemann – Carlsen case is not stopping. While Niemann spoke on the case on several occasions, the World Chess Champion did not have any public announcement since then and yesterday gave his first interview after the drama hit the chess world. Carlsen said he is very impressed by Niemann’s play and mentioned Niemann’s mentor Maxim Dugly, adding that cheaters in the future should not be taken lightly either online or over the board.

Susan Polgar commented on the recent happenings saying that the performances of other young talents have been overshadowed: “After the famous 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 1-0 game, Carlsen went on to crush the field, by 9 points! Carlsen – Niemann can technically face each other in the final! Will chess speak for itself or will more chess drama rule? Sadly the performances of other young talents are overshadowed“, posted Susan on her twitter account. See the tweet below

After Carlsen’s withdrawal from the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Susan Polgar explained that the professional reputation of many parties is at stake, and described Carlsen’s resignation in the Julius Baer Generation Cup as a protest move.
