A new super-tournament for your chess calendar – the Uzchess Cup second edition will be a 10 player round robin with 2726 ELO average (according to the May rating list). Top seeded in the Masters section is Arjun Erigaisi who will be accompanied by his fellow countrymen Pragg, Aravindh, and Harikrishna. The local heroes on the board will be Abdusattorov, Sindarov, Yakubboev, and Vokhidov. To avoid making it an India vs Uzbekistan match, two more players join the field – Nepomniachtchi and Rapport.

Sharjah Masters 2025 is taking place 16th May-26th May in Sharjah, UAE. The main tournament is a classical event for players over 2500 elo, which has collected 65 Grandmasters and participants from 31 countries. Top players include the 2700 club members Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Anish Giri, and Parham Maghsoodloo (who recently got his ticket for Las Vegas), the European Champion Alexandar Indjic (recent interview here), the winner from last year’s edition Bardiya Daneshvar (coming with gold from the Asian Individual Championship), Samuel Sevian (who is on a summer tour and his next event is Stepan Avagyan Memorial), young stars Nikolas Theodorou, Shant Sargsyan, Amin Tabatabaei, Leon Luke Mendonca, etc. Scroll down for the full participants list.

Day 1 of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 in Paris took place on April 7, 2025, marking the start of the second leg of this prestigious Chess960 (Freestyle Chess) tournament. The day featured the first half of the 11-round rapid round-robin phase with a time control of 10 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. The events of Freestyle Paris Day 1

Magnus Carlsen, the world number one, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov emerged as the early leaders, each securing five wins out of six matches. Carlsen defeated three of the four Indian participants—World Champion D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi, and R Praggnanandhaa—but lost a game to Arjun Erigaisi.

Abdusattorov, a last-minute replacement for Hans Niemann (who withdrew for alegedly personal reasons), also impressed with his strong performance. Meanwhile, Gukesh struggled, losing four of his six matches, including games against Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. Among the Indian contingent, Arjun Erigaisi stood out with 3.5 points, including notable victories over Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, making him the best-performing Indian player of the day. Praggnanandhaa earned 2.5 points with two wins and a draw, while Vidit Gujrathi managed just one win, placing him at the bottom of the standings.

The President Cup is going to take place from 21 to 28 November in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. President Cup is a 9-round Swiss open with $69,000 prize fund and features strong participation including Uzbekistan’s Olympic stars Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Javokhir Sindarov, India’s Abhimanyu Puranik, Murali Karthikeyan, Pranesh , Gupta Sankalp, Rithvik R Raja, Iran’s top players Parham Maghsoodloo and Amin Tabatabaei. Tata Steel Chess 2025 participants and information

Tata Steel Chess 2025 will take place in Wijk aan Zee from 17 January to 2 February 2025. The field of participants of the 87th Tata Steel Chess Tournament is once again extremely strong, with no fewer than five players from the global top ten. The new world champion may also be on display, as Gukesh is in the list of participants. World Chess Championship 2024 – Gukesh vs Ding Liren is in Singapore from 23 November to 13 December and, at eighteen, could become the youngest world champion in history. Gukesh is a good friend of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee: last year he lost in the thrilling final in the tiebreak to Wei Yi from China. Wei Yi will of course defend his title.

Previous winners Fabiano Caruana from the United States and the Dutch players Anish Giri and Jorden van Foreest are also making another attempt at the title in the Masters tournament. Tournament director Jeroen van den Berg is pleased with the field of participants. “I am always looking for a combination of well-known top players and talents.

The Masters are attended by Grandmasters who can still be seen as talented in terms of age, but who have been performing so well in terms of performance that they have actually outgrown that status. I am mainly talking about Praggnanandhaa, Abdusattorov and indeed Gukesh. I am proud when I see how they, partly due to their previous participation in our tournament, are now really structurally among the world’s top. In addition, I aim to select as many players as possible who enjoy a fight. In that respect too, I think we can expect an interesting tournament.”

The currently lesser-known talents will play in the Challengers tournament. Among others, the two reigning youth world champions Kazybek Nogerbek (Kazakhstan) and Divya Deshmukh (India) will play there. But also the eleven-year-old promise Faustino Oro from Argentina, the fourteen-year-old Lu Miaoyi from China and the sixteen-year-old Ediz Gürel from Turkey have been invited by Van den Berg. Van den Berg: “I am really looking forward to their arrival and I am curious whether they can make the same great steps as the aforementioned names at the Masters. Our tournament really proves to be a springboard to the world top, and we as an organization are very proud of that.”
