Alireza Firouzja dirty flags Magnus Carlsen in day 2 of Global Chess League https://www.chessdom.com/alireza-firouzja-dirty-flags-magnus-carlsen-in-day-2-of-global-chess-league/ Fri, 04 Oct 2024 17:02:25 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=94369 Alireza Firouzja dirty flags Magnus Carlsen in day 2 of Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. In a time scramble, Firouzja opted for 80…Nh4 winning on time instead of winning the queen. Carlsen lost on time since there is technically sufficient material to checkmate still on the board. Taking the queen would have been a draw.

The Firouzja – Carlsen game did not have large importance for the final outcome of the match, as Triveni Continental Kings steamrolled Alpine SG Pipers 17:4. However, the dirty flag in a losing position by Firouzja sparkled a debate.

George Mastrokoukos criticizes the situation, “Sorry to say this but such games are a comedy. Chess organisers not implementing increment for each move, even 1 second, just prove that they don’t care at all about the game itself”

Mark Harrison notes, “Chess should be about playing the best moves. Especially at the top level.”

Magnus Carlsen and Alireze Firouzja just had a clash in the Julius Baer Chess Cup and will meet again in the Champions Chess Tour 2024 finals in Oslo
