world chess championship – Chessdom https://www.chessdom.com Chess, chess news, live chess games Sun, 27 Apr 2025 20:28:14 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.1 Bobby Fischer’s unparalleled achievement https://www.chessdom.com/bobby-fischers-unparalleled-achievement/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 20:27:14 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=98843 Bobby Fischer was an enigmatic chess prodigy and a towering legend in the game’s history for his brilliance and unrelenting drive. He brought many innovations to the game of chess, and one of them was a substantial increase in money paid to chess players.

Thanks to the Historical Currency Convertor and The Big Book Of World Chess Championships by Andre Schulz, we find a realistic historical comparison in prize funds of World Championships, converted to today’s money value. HT: Anish Giri

Absolute leader is Garry Kasparov, with the top prize fund figure being the Kasparov – Karpov World Chess Championship of 1990 with 5,7 million USD. Kasparov holds the second and third positions as well. Kasparov – Short from 1993 stands at 4,7 million USD, while his 1987 World Chess Championship match with Karpov stands at 3,5 million USD.

However, the real unparalleled achievement on this list is the one of Bobby Fischer. His match with Spassky from 1972 achieved a whole order of magnitude increase to prize funds. Until then money for matches were maximum in the hundreds of thousands, while he brought the figure above 1 million USD (1,6 million, to be precise). To achieve the same success, someone has to bring the prize funds for World Championships from millions to tens of millions USD.

Gukesh – Ding predictions, Carlsen’s take (take, take) https://www.chessdom.com/gukesh-ding-predictions-carlsens-take/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 07:36:19 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=96907 The World Chess Championship 2024 is set to take place between November 25 and December 13, 2024, in Singapore. This event will feature a match between the reigning world champion, Ding Liren from China, and the challenger, Gukesh Dommaraju from India, to determine who will be the World Chess Champion 2024. 5 days remain to the start of the World Chess Championship 2024 and Chessdom continues its countdown. Expect daily news, interviews, videos and more as we gear up for the World Chess Championship, the most important individual chess event of the year. All details on Ding – Gukesh: Preview / Schedule / Venue / Live / Promo video

Multiple experts have already stated their opinion on the upcoming match – talking about the rating slump of Ding Liren, of the effects of the Olympic gold on Gukesh, and more. But the one expert that the chess fans should listen to is the man, who himself participated in multiple World Chess Championships and won them all.

Magnus Carlsen gives his prediction on Gukesh – Ding Liren

Magnus Carlsen’s take (take, take) on the upcoming Gukesh – Ding match is not one sided. “This match is so open, but I think Ding Liren will get the first chance. I could see a scenario where Ding Liren gets two or three massive chances in the first five or six games. And he absolutely has to take them!” says Magnus Carlsen. “Ding cannot lose the first game. He managed to come back against Ian, but from what we have seen from Ding Liren from the last one and a half years, I do not think he will come back if he loses game 1,” continues Carlsen and concludes that Ding Liren is the likely player to win a game first. Throwback: How to play a World Championship like a World Champion!

What will be the number of decisive games in Gukesh – Ding Liren?

Magnus Carlsen believes the number of decisive games in Gukesh – Ding Liren will be high. “The only way we get a low number of decisive games is if Ding gets chances and keeps missing them.” Carlsen refers to the previous World Chess Championship, where the two players exchanged blows, and the expectations of Magnus are that this will continue in the World Chess Championship 2024.

Which openings will we see in the Gukesh – Ding Liren match?

Magnus Carlsen thinks we will see a variety of openings in the Gukesh – Ding Liren match. “My guess is that we will see both 1.d4 and 1.e4 in the match. What we saw from Ding last time is that he moved around the whole match, he had prepared seven ideas for seven white games.” Replay: Nepo – Ding all games / Reactions to 4.h3 by Ding Liren

World Chess Championship 2024 – the ratings https://www.chessdom.com/world-chess-championship-2024-the-ratings/ Sat, 26 Oct 2024 21:26:48 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=95927 The World Chess Championship 2024 – Gukesh vs Ding Liren is set to take place between November 25 and December 13, 2024, in Singapore. This event will feature a match between the reigning world champion, Ding Liren from China, and the challenger, Gukesh Dommaraju from India, to determine who will be the World Chess Champion 2024.

Ding Liren’s rating has been suffering ever since he won the World Chess Champion title against Ian Nepomniachtchi. He reached his peak rating in November 2018, when he was 2816 elo and ranked 4th in the world. Since January 2023, Ding Liren started active preparation for the World Championship match and his rating started falling with every event played. But even after the World Chess Championship match, and despite low activity, he continued to lose rating points. This year he finished in the bottom half of the table of Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024 with a score of 6/13 (+2−3=8), in Norway Chess 2024 Ding scored 3,0/10 (+0 =6 -4), and in the Chess Olympiad 2024 he finished with a score of 3,5/8 (+0−1=7). As a result his rating went from 2780 to 2728, which will be the rating he starts with in the World Chess Championship 2024. It is also the lowest rating Ding Liren has had in the past 10 years.

The rating of Gukesh is with the opposite trend. Since August 2016, when Gukesh was only 10 years old and rated 1974 elo, the trend has been constantly up, with isolated exceptions. Only on three occasions Gukesh has had two consecutive months of rating decline, and even those can be defined more as temporary rating stagnation. In 2024 Gukesh has been brilliant. In Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024 he scored 8.5/13 to finish in a 4-way tie for first place. In the 2024 Candidates Tournament Gukesh won the first place with 9/14, while in the Chess Olympiad 2024 he won double gold and scored the second highest ever performance. This put him in position to attack 2800 , but a shaky European Club Cup left him at 2783 elo.

Magnus Carlsen negotiates the format of the World Chess Championship Match https://www.chessdom.com/magnus-carlsen-negotiates-the-format-of-the-world-chess-championship-match/ Mon, 04 Jul 2022 14:24:40 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=79298 Ian Nepomniachtchi won the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament 2022 with a round to spare, thus becoming the challenger in the World Chess Championship Match which will be played next year. The reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen should be the defender of the title, but Magnus was repeatedly saying he is considering his retirement from the World Chess Championship Matches. In one of the latest interviews, Magnus Carlsen explained he is not closer to playing another World Championship Match than he was before, but he is still not 100% certain about the decision. “I wanted to quit while on top, and it’s clearly what’s most likely to happen” said Carlsen to the Norwegian newspaper VG two months ago.

Reigning World Chess Champion yesterday visited Palacio de Santona, the playing venue of the FIDE Candidates Tournament, where he met with the FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, informs El Pais. Carlsen and Dvorkovich had a private meeting that lasted around 40 minutes. According to the El Pais sources, the main topic of the meeting was the format of the World Chess Championship Match and there’s a reasonable chance that Magnus decides to play the Match: “All the sources contacted by EL PAÍS requested anonymity and agreed that if Carlsen had decided to renounce the crown, he would have said so clearly. The fact that he met with Dvorkovich for so long without a subsequent statement means, according to those sources, that there is a reasonable chance of agreement.”

During the 14th final round of the Candidates Tournament, the Director general of FIDE Emil Sutovsky joined the chess.com live studio and explained that he and the FIDE President met with Magnus. He expressed optimism about Magnus Carlsen accepting to play the World Championship Match: “I think it was very constructive (the meeting) and left hope that it can work.

Candidates Chess 2022 playoff

As per the decision made at the FIDE Council meeting on December 27, a playoff has been introduced for the Candidates Tournament and the Women’s Candidates Tournament, to be played in the case of a tie for first place.
This decision has been taken after consultation with all the players who have already qualified for the competition. A majority of them favoured the option of a play-off over the tie-break system used in previous editions (“1. The results of the games between the players involved in the tie; 2. Number of wins; 3. Sonneborn-Berger”).

The play-off will consist of rapid games. Details like the exact time control to be used and the total number of players to take part in the tie-break, were decided after consultation with players. An updated version of the tiebreak rules
