Navara describes the emotional torture by Kramnik’s allegations, the silence of FIDE, their posterior inadequate reaction and total disregard on basic FIDE ethical and moral values.

A little more than a month after the escalation of the scandal, FIDE has addressed the issue with an open statement. The FIDE Management Board says, “We wish to emphasize once again that throughout his chess career, GM Navara has earned an unquestionable reputation as a paragon of a fair play. The chess community is well aware that David is a person of a great sensitivity and integrity, particularly vulnerable to any implication of unfair play. Without entering into legal or stylistic analyses of the statements made, we believe that – above all – mutual respect and empathy among colleagues must take precedence. We are firmly convinced that the lawsuit against GM Navara should be withdrawn as soon as possible in the interest of the entire chess community. We sincerely hope that GM Kramnik will take this morally justified step, which we believe will be welcomed by the broader chess world.” Scroll down for the full statement of the FIDE Management Board. Earlier FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky in a personal message on his Twitter/X account said, “I find Kramnik’s latest address to David Navara inhuman”

FIDE Management board statement on the Kramnik vs Navara case

As the world governing body of chess, FIDE takes the issue of fair play – both OTB and online – very seriously, especially considering the current widespread popularity of online platforms and their impact on the growth and development of the game worldwide.

In this regard, the methods publicly proposed by GM Vladimir Kramnik deserve careful review and assessment for practical applicability. FIDE will establish a dedicated task force to evaluate these methods and invites GM Kramnik to present the details of his approach and statistical data for an official FIDE evaluation.

At the same time, we are gravely concerned that the way Mr. Kramnik presents his points brings a lot of harm to the chess community. Mr. Kramnik must recognize, that it is not just his opinion or questions – it is a very clear narrative, and coming from the former World Champion it could be ruinous for the careers and a very well-being of certain players.

The current discourse has significantly affected such a respected member of the chess community as GM David Navara and has now led to a defamation lawsuit being filed by GM Kramnik against GM Navara.

We wish to emphasize once again that throughout his chess career, GM Navara has earned an unquestionable reputation as a paragon of a fair play.

We sincerely hope that GM Kramnik will take this morally justified step, which we believe will be welcomed by the broader chess world.

Context (28.05)

Kramnik is known to have published numerous articles and videos regarding cheating in chess. On multiple occasions he uses a small sample size. As a result, his conclusions may be perceived as accusations (this is the case in a multitude of well documented videos, articles, and opinions by experts here, here, here, here are just a few examples), allegations, or suspicions about cheating in chess, and even as insults to players’ professionalism. Despite how each individual perceives his words, on Chessdom, starting 25 May, we have adopted a term that Vladimir Kramnik used himself – allegations.

In accordance with established journalistic practices, we work with information and quotations from sources, including Kramnik himself. Kramnik has never contacted Chessdom via its official communication channel posted in the header of the website. Our attempt to contact Kramnik was futile and met with a swift block. The latest threats by Kramnik on social media leave little room for any good-faith discussions (further details to follow)

Regardless, we stand by accuracy, fairness, and independence of journalism and will continue reporting on the Kramnik – Navara case and its tremendous social importance.

FIDE causes massive confusion with the Women’s World Cup participants list https://www.chessdom.com/fide-causes-massive-confusion-with-the-womens-world-cup-participants-list/ Sat, 21 Jun 2025 12:22:42 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=100073 FIDE Women World Chess Cup 2025 is taking place July 5 – July 29 in Batumi, Georgia, and is one of the major events of The Chess Calendar. A total of 107 participants (increased from the initially announced 103 participants) will compete for 691 000 eur prize fund. This is the third edition of the FIDE Women’s World Cup. The first one was in Sochi in 2021 and was won by Alexandra Kosteniuk. The second one was in Baku in 2023 and was won by Aleksandra Goryachkina. Now both of them will participate in the FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup 2025 in Batumi together with a strong field of world’s best players.

The qualification paths for the Women’s World Cup are detailed in the FIDE regulations and the main chess body has been updating the participants list regularly. As of yesterday, 104 of the 107 participants were known – missing only the two FIDE President Nominees and the Hong Kong nomination. Today, FIDE announced the two FIDE President Nominees, leaving out a long list of players including 47 from the World Top 100. The only question remaining was who will play instead of the Hong Kong player.

When the news broke out, OntheQueenside exclaimed, “Vaishali is out of the World Cup!” FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky replied, “Vishali is not out” – a reply that does not coincide with the official information , thus provoking a barrage of questions from the chess community. Sutovsky added, “She makes it by rating.”

No further clarification was provided, and while the fans were wondering weather Vaishali will substitute a player based on rating criteria, or she was a choice for the Hong Kong spot based on rating, a new plot twist appeared. Josephine Heinemann discovered a broadcast on Lichess, titled “WGM Shukhman vs WGM Balabayeva Women’s World Cup Wild Card Match” (follow the games below, bringing more confusion in the mix – why were these players chosen, do they play for the Hong Kong spot or to substitute someone, or is there a wild card player problem to start with.

The confusion brought by FIDE, the lack of transparency, and the messages by the FIDE CEO lacking critical details are far from the transparency standards that are needed for the most important knockout chess event of the year. We continue to follow this developing story.

Update 14:31: Matnadze Bujiashvili, Ann (ESP) – Spain (replaces Khademalsharieh, Sarasadat)

Update 14:35:

Tang, Zoey (USA) – (replaces Pourkashiyan, Atousa)
Osmak, Yuliia (UKR) – (replaces Buksa, Nataliya)

Update 14:38 Sky Xia asked the President of Hong Kong Chess Federation Mr.KK Chan on the topic and he answered, “No one will represent Hong Kong to play, we a female player to play before, but she declined” (more news from Sky Xia here / follow on Twitter/X)

Update 16:14: The multiple updates in the FIDE Women’s World Cup participants list that were rolled out thorough the day continue. Now Vaishali R (IND) replaces Assaubayeva, Bibisara. Full story here

Update 22.06 Shukhman, Anna (FID) wins the mini match and enters the FIDE Women’s World Cup. She is listed as Nominees of the FIDE President with an asterisk next to her name, saying “An additional wild card was granted by the FIDE President due to Hong Kong’s refusal to nominate a player.”

Additionally, Zoey Tang (USA) who replaces Atousa Pourkashiyan is now replaced by Thalia Cervantes Landeiro.

Update 23.06 The official regulations state, “The pairings shall be announced not later than 14 days before the beginning of WWCup, unless the FIDE President decides otherwise due to a force majeure.” There are 13 days remaining to the start of the Women’s World Cup and no pairings are announced yet

In a message on the social platform Twitter/X, Vladimir Kramnik has admitted to making allegations. Kramnik says,”You have confused me with your “notable player” Hikaru. I do not make “open unbased accusations” but “well argumented allegations” and ready to defend it.”

FIDE has rules about making allegations and have already acted on such. Russian Grandmaster and coach Evgeniy Solozhenkin accused Assaubayeva on several internet articles of cheating during the World Youth U14 Championship in Uruguay in September 2017. GM Evgeniy Solozhenkin was found to violate par. 2.2.11 of the FIDE Code of Ethics. GM Solozhenkin was suspended for making cheating allegations.

Assaubayeva’s family sued Solozhenkin for defamatory allegations made in public and in the media that offended Assaubayeva’s honor and dignity. The Moscow Appellate Court ordered Solozhenkin to apologize, disavow his allegations to the media, delete the defamatory articles, and pay a compensatory sum of 100 thousand rubles.

FIDE seems to have grounds to start a procedure in the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission against the allegations of Kramnik towards David Navara and a multitude of other players.

FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky statement

No, more than that. Inhuman. You might be in your right legally, or maybe you are not. But one has to go over the edge to attack like that a person who clearly exposed his major mental struggles. I really think it gets too far. No matter who is right legally, and whose wording was more (im)precise. There was nothing in this particular dispute, that is worthy of such an assault on a fragile person, let alone colleague. Let us show some support for David. He needs it.

David Navara says, “When joining FIDE, Mr Dvorkovich used the slogan Because we care. I would like to thank him for the good things which he has done for FIDE. In my opinion, Mr. Dvorkovich is personally responsible for the way how FIDE treated me. He was among the recipients of most of my messages on the topic, including the ignored calls for help. Given that he is the FIDE President, no other member could have forbidden him to reply. He could also have delegated it to someone. The actions of FIDE (or lack thereof) caused me a lot of suffering, although my games and results in Titled Tuesdays were completely in order. I was open about my health problems in my desperate calls for help, yet FIDE did not care at all to react and answer my questions, which were perfectly reasonable. Nor to send me a single word of apology. I firmly believe that Mr Dvorkovich should resign.

FIDE Fair Play Commission comments on the incident involving GM Kirill Shevchenko

Following the incidents that occurred at the Honor Division of the Spanish Club Chess Championship, which involved Grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko (FIDE ID: 14129574), the FIDE Fair Play Commission immediately initiated preliminary investigations, which led the sole investigator, Vincent Geeraets, to be “comfortably satisfied that a prima facie case has been established against GM Shevchenko”. The measure is deemed to be necessary “because it would be inappropriate for a player of GM Shevchenko’s caliber to take part in tournaments or competitions under the auspices of FIDE while he is under investigation for a cheating offense (“use of phone”).” The request, which was formally presented by FPL Chair Yuri Garrett to EDC Chair Yolander Persaud, is strictly based on the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Code in force: “Art. 12.1e of the Ethics and Disciplinary Code stipulates that a player may be prohibited from participating in chess activities during an investigation. Relevant is art. 12.4a, which indicates that a provisional suspension requires that a prima facie case can be made against the player in question. Art 18.2 of the EDC Procedural Rules indicates that in cases of urgency, such a ban may be imposed directly without the party concerned having been heard beforehand.” It is of paramount importance to highlight that “Such a provisional suspension, however, would not indicate that GM Shevchenko is guilty of a cheating offense. This needs to be carefully investigated on the assumption that the player is innocent.” To this effect, an Investigatory Panel chaired by Vincent Geeraets has been appointed.
