History was made at the World Youth Chess Championship in Brazil. Saad Abobaker Elmi becomes the first Norwegian of African origin with IM title. Elmi, who originally hails from Somalia, scored his first IM norm at Kragero Resort Chess, his second at Zadar Open , and now has secured his third IM norm a round before the end of the World Youth Chess Championship.

The event for Saad Abobaker Elmi comes right after the European Club Cup, where he played on board 1 for Bærum Schakselskap , scoring 5,5/7 and adding 30 Elo points. Now a round before the end of the World Youth 2024, Saad Abobaker Elmi has added extra 26 Elo to his rating.

Champions Chess Tour 2024 is in Oslo

Former president of Swedish Chess Federation admits to losing 43 games on purpose

Ever since the 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen, who consequently withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup 2022 (see the timetable of events related to the Carlsen – Niemann case below), the topic of cheating in chess is the top news in mass medias.

As Norwegian VG reports, the former president of Swedish Chess Federation Carl Fredrik Johansson was investigated by Swedish Chess Federation for violating the fair-play rules on chess.com. Johansson lost 43 chess.com games in a row, admitting to VG that he did it on purpose. Johansson who is now the head of Uppsala Skolschacksallskap, well-known Sweden’s chess club for children, explains that he lost 43 games for educational purposes as he uses his chess.com account for teaching. He adds that he is falsely accused of cheating because of the power struggle in the Swedish Chess Federation which he led until 2018: “I used my own account for the purpose of teaching. I shouldn’t have done that, and I’ve apologized. That the false accusations keep coming confirms that it has nothing to do with the issue. But that it is about a power struggle in the Swedish Chess Federation, of which I was previously president“.

The actual president of the Swedish Chess Federation Hakan Jalling said to VG that there are three Swedish players caught cheating online on chess.com and the federation investigated the case. The two players were banned for two years, while Carl Fredrik Johansson received a warning for manipulating his online rating: “There are three players who have been caught cheating online at Chess.com, and it happened this summer. They had manipulated their Chess.com rating, i.e. deliberately played poorly to lower the rating. Everyone had played their way down from high levels, from over 2000 to under 800, to be able to play in the lowest group“. Johansson stated the accusations are “bizarre” as there are no motives of dropping to the lower level by cheating.

Just a few days ago, the President of Norwegian Chess Federation admitted to cheating online during chess.com’s PRO Chess League. However, his chess.com account was not closed for violation of fair-play rules, and chess.com’s Chief Chess Officer Daniel Rensch explained in a written statement that there was a 1/1000 chance of being wrong. Faced with a wave of critics, Joachim Nilsen a day after resigned from his position in the Norwegian Chess Federation.

The 2022 Norwegian Chess Championships took place from 8-16 July 2022 in Kongsvinger, Norway. The event gathered around 300 players and it was played in 16 groups: Elite, Masters, Candidates, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Grop 4, Seniors 50+, Seniors 65+, and different Juniors and Cadet groups.

GM Simen Agdestein convincingly won the Elite group thus becoming the Norwegian Chess Champion for the 8th time in his career. Agdestein claimed his first National Champion title in 1982 as a 15-year-old, and today, 40 years after, he became the oldest Norwegian National Champion holding eight national trophies. The 2022 Norwegian Chess Championships take place from 8-16 July 2022 in Kongsvinger, Norway. The event gathers around 300 players and it is played in 16 groups: Elite, Masters, Candidates, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Grop 4, Seniors 50+, Seniors 65+, and different Juniors and Cadet groups.

The main Elite event gathers some of the top Norwegian players, and it’s played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with 14 participants. GM Jon Ludvig Hammer, GM Simen Agdestein and GM Frode Olav Olsen Urkedal headline the field of the Elite Championship. (scroll down for starting rank lists of all groups)

Norwegian Chess Championships 2022 – LIVE games

About the groups of the Norwegian Chess Championship:

CLASS ELITE: Eligible to play are the last three national tournaments, the top three in the class below in the last
national tournament (possibly best 7% in class Candidate Elite), reigning junior Norwegian champion, and
players with rating within the rating base for the class , as well as those whom NSF finds qualified.

CLASS CANDIDATE ELITE: Eligible to play are those, best 7% in class champion in last national tournament
(minimum 3), second place in junior last national tournament, reigning northern Norwegian champion and reigning
circuit champions individually if they are chosen in a tournament rated with FIDE standard rating, players
with a rating within the rating basis for the class (2200-2400), as well as those whom NSF finds qualified.

CLASS MASTER, CLASS 1, CLASS 2, CLASS 3, CLASS 4: Eligible to participate are players with a rating within the rating basis for the class, those who achieved at least a 60 percent score in the class in the previous national tournament, the 7% (rounded) best – but at least three players – in the class below in the previous national tournament, the winner of the class below in the last completed Norwegian Grand Prix, as well as those whom NSF finds qualified. In the champion class, the reigning North Norwegian champion and reigning circuit champions are also individually eligible to play if they are selected in a tournament with a long reflection time, minimum rating category 3.

CLASS 5: Consists of players who are not eligible to play in any of the aforementioned classes

SENIOR CLASS:This is divided into three groups, “50+” and “65+”, which is open to anyone who holds the age limit, and “50+ B” which is closed to players in class 2 or higher. The winner of 50+ gets the title Senior Norwegian Champion 50+, and the winner of 605+ gets the title Senior Norwegian Champion 65+, and holds the title for the next national tournament. Best player over 75 years in «65+» must be awarded separately. If players over the age of 75 do not participate in «65+», the best player over the age of 75 in «50+ B» must be awarded separately.

JUNIOR CLASS: This is divided into two groups “Junior A”, which is open to anyone who holds the age limit, and “Junior B” which is closed to players in class 2 or higher. The winner of Junior A gets the title Junior Norwegian Champion and holds the title for the next national tournament.

THE CADET CLASS:This is divided into two groups “Kadett A” which is open to anyone who holds the age limit, and “Kadett B” which is closed to players in class 3 or higher. The winner of Kadett A gets the title Kadett Norwegian Champion and holds the title for the next national tournament.

LILLEPUTTKLASSEN: The winner gets the title Lilleputtnorgesmester and holds the title until the next national tournament.

MINIPUTT CLASS: The winner is given the title Miniputt Norwegian Champion and holds the title until the next national tournament.

The largest chess board in the World set in Norway

The MegaChess set from RMD Recuperacion Materiales Diversos built from 800 recycled tires was unveiled today in Stavanger’s Bjergsted Parken, Norway. The chess pieces are made from recycled car tires, weighing up to 240kg, and sit on the 144 squared meter board – the largest chess board in the World.

The first move with the giant pieces was made by reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and world-class chess players who take part in the 2022 Norway Chess. Detailed information about the World’s largest chessboard can be found here

Norway announces team for 44th Chess Olympiad 2022

The 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 takes place from 28th July – 10th August in Chennai, India, and 100 countries already registered for the event. A number of countries revealed the composition of their teams for Chennai, such as: Germany, Spain, Serbia, Monaco, Kenya, India, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Malawi…

Norway joined them and today disclosed the composition of their team which will travel to India:

Reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen will lead the Norwegian team. Carlsen debuted in the World Chess Olympiad in 2004, playing the top board with score of 3/5 points.

144-square-meter Chess Board arrived in Stavanger

The MegaChess set from RMD Recuperacion Materiales Diversos built from 800 recycled tires has just arrived in Stavanger, Norway! The chess pieces are made from recycled tires, weighing up to 220kg, and sit on the 144 squared meter chess board – the largest chess board in the World! The King piece is 180cm tall, being about the same height as the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. The chess pieces will have small wheels beneath to be easily moved through the squares.

The MegaChess set will be open for the public to play this summer and it’s expected to attract many chess enthusiasts during the Norway Chess 2022 – taking place from May 31st to June 10th in Stavanger.

The board is 11.5 meters x 11.5 meters and has a total area of 144 square meters. The largest piece, the king, is 180 centimeters tall and weighs 220 kilograms. The pieces are a copy of the pieces that Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer played with during the legendary World Cup match in 1972 – only in a much larger format. About 800 recycled car tires have been used to make the pieces.
