Teodora Injac’s gold is the first ever European Women Individual title for Serbia Updated list of European Women Chess Champions

Teodora Injac finished with 9,5/11, added 18,7 ELO points to her rating with performance of 2592. She finished 1,5 points ahead of silver medalist Irina Bulmaga and bronze medalist Mai Narva. However, Injac met only two GM opponents, Natalia Zhukova and Bella Khotenashvili, and thus could not complete a norm.

The success of Teodora Injac underlines an amazing generation of Serbian chess players. Last year the European Individual Champion in the open section was also from Serbia, as Aleksandar Indjic won EICC 2024. Before Injic and Injac, Serbia did not have individual gold medals on the European scene.

Teodora Injac with eight consecutive victory in Rhodes https://www.chessdom.com/teodora-injac-with-eight-consecutive-victory-in-rhodes/ Thu, 10 Apr 2025 07:40:49 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=98284 With only two rounds left of the European Women Individual Championship 2025, IM Teodora Injac continues her stampede, scoring an eight consecutive win. IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454) kept the sole lead in the event after defeating IM Lilit Mkrtchian (ARM, 2388) in today’s 9th round. The wins of Teodora Injac could have been a a perfect 9 out of 9, but in a bizarre game in round 1 she missed a mate in two

Today’s round was opened by the ECU President Mr. Zurab Azmaiparasvhili who played the first ceremonial move on the top board game between IM Teodora Injac and IM Lilit Mkrtchian.

IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454) kept the sole lead in the event after defeating IM Lilit Mkrtchian (ARM, 2388) in today’s 9th round. The position was very balanced out of the opening, but Lilit Mrktchian had a passive approach and allowed her opponent to take the edge and valuable space advantage. Teodora Injac transformed the advantage into a pawn up, activated her pieces, locked Mkrtchian into defensive mode and forced her on resignation.

IM Irina Bulmaga (ROU, 2362) was victorious with whites against WFM Anastasia Kirtadze (GEO, 2180) who suffered her second loss in a row after a fantastic start at the European Women’s Chess Championship 2025. As in most of her games in the event, Bulmaga had some issues in the opening and slightly worse position, but then took the initiative and used her opponent’s mistakes to gain the advantage in the late middlegame. A few moves before the time control were inaccurate by both sides, but Irina Bulmaga played it better for a decisive advantage which was further improved and converted into a win after Kirtadze’s piece blunder.

Scoring 7.5 points, Irina Bulmaga closely follows the leader, and there is a full point gap between her and a group of seven players who tie for the third place with the score of 6.5 points (each).

The 10th penultimate round of the European Women’s Chess Championship 2025 brings interesting pairings, and a direct encounter for the top between IM Irina Bulmaga and IM Teodora Injac.

The 10th round starts tomorrow at 14:00 CET (15:00 local time) and live games with commentaries by GM Alojzije Jankovic and Dragana Nikolovska can be followed through the ECU TV platform or ECU YouTube channel. Photos by Mark Livshitz, Jim Laga and ECU TV

Teodora Injac is the leader of European Women’s Chess Championship 2025 https://www.chessdom.com/teodora-injac-is-the-leader-of-european-womens-chess-championship-2025/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 05:32:43 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=98267 Eight rounds were played at the European Women’s Chess Championship 2025 and IM Teodora Injac made a spectacular comeback after the loss in the first round, taking the sole lead in the tournament. IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454) suffered a tough loss in the first round against WFM Anastasia Kirtadze (GEO, 2180) where she had a mate in two motive to win the game, but missed it and entered a lost rooks endgame. She has now won seven consecutive games to leap on the top and take the sole lead in the tournament with only three rounds to go!

IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454) today scored against GM Bella Khotenashvili (GEO, 2418). Playing with black pieces, Injac equalized from the early stage in the opening, but then made a few inaccuracies that caused engine showing a slight edge for Khotenashvili. Teodora Injac then found a brilliant tactical motive and Khotenashvili miscalculated and accepted the sacrifice which brought her king into inescapable mating net. Injac chased white’s king all way to h5 square, forcing Bella Khotenashvili to resign.

New record: Stockfish crosses the 3700 elo mark

Playing on the second board, IM Lilit Mkrtchian (ARM, 2388) defeated WFM Anastasia Kirtadze (GEO, 2180) and the latter suffered the first loss in the tournament. Mkrtchian had a better position from the opening, and gradually improved the advantage to eventually win the game and join the race for the top.

IM Irina Bulmaga (ROU, 2362) defeated IM Sophie Milliet (FRA, 2371) with Black pieces after a very complex game. Bulmaga had a troublesome position after the opening, but Sophie Milliet misplayed it, allowing her opponent to take the edge. Irina Bulmaga found a nice motive of exchange sacrifice, getting two connected passed pawns in the center – that happened to be the match winners.

Scoring 6.5 points each, IM Irina Bulmaga and IM Lilit Mkrtchian follow the leader, trailing by half a point.

Teodora Injac joins Anastasia Kirtadze in the lead in EWICC 2025 https://www.chessdom.com/teodora-injac-joins-anastasia-kirtadze-in-the-lead-in-ewicc-2025/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 21:28:18 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=98144 IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454) won her round 7 game to join WFM Anastasia Kirtadze on the top of the European Women Individual Chess Championship 2025. It was an exciting round at Rhodes, as ten of the top twelve boards finished with decisive results. Scroll down for the complete list of results of the day.

EIWCC 2025: European Women’s Chess Championship 2025 / EIWCC preview / Live games with computer analysis / List of European Women Chess Champions Reports: Round 1 / Round 2 / Round 3 / Round 4 / Round 5 / Round 6

Today’s round was opened by ECU President Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili who addressed the players, while the delegate of the Israel Chess Federation Mr. Moshe Slav played the first ceremonial move on the top-board game between WFM Anastasia Kirtadze and IM Sophie Milliet to inaugurate the start of the round.

IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454) today defeated IM Mai Narva (EST, 2380) to join WFM Anastasia Kirtadze on the top. Injac had a slightly better position out of the opening, but the game was full of turnovers and inaccuracies on both sides. Mai Narva made a fatal mistake with 33…b4?? blundering a mate motive, and Teodora Injac used that to win the game in the next few moves.

WFM Anastasia Kirtadze (GEO, 2180) played on the top board with white pieces against IM Sophie Milliet (FRA, 2371). A very solid game that was in range of equality for most of the time finished in a draw after tense fights, with the threefold repetition in a drawn rooks endgame.

The leading duo is followed by four players who score 5.5/7 points each: GM Bella Khotenashvili (GEO, 2418), IM Lilit Mkrtchian (ARM, 2388), IM Sophie Milliet (FRA, 2371), and IM Irina Bulmaga (ROU, 2362).

The 8th round starts tomorrow at 14:00 CET (15:00 local time) and live games with commentaries by GM Alojzije Jankovic and Dragana Nikolovska can be followed through the ECU TV platform or ECU YouTube channel. Photos by Jim Laga

Multiple upsets at the start of EWICC in Rhodes https://www.chessdom.com/multiple-upsets-at-the-start-of-ewicc-in-rhodes/ Tue, 01 Apr 2025 09:02:27 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=97516 The 25th edition of the European Women’s Chess Championship commenced today in Rhodes, Greece. The opening ceremony of the event took place shortly before the start of the first round with the attendance by the ECU Secretary General Mr. Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou and ECU Treasurer Mr. Ion Dobronauteanu. The Chief Arbiter Mr. Marco Biagioli announced the start of the round, and the ECU Secretary General made the first ceremonial move in the top-board game between GM Nino Batsiashvili (GEO, 2473) and WIM Jasmin-Denise Schloffer (AUT, 2188) to inaugurate the start of the competition.

EWICC Rhodes: European Women’s Chess Championship 2025 / EIWCC preview / Live games with computer analysis / List of European Women Chess Champions

The first round was marked with many upsets. The biggest happened in the game on the second board where WFM Anastasia Kirtadze (GEO, 2180) defeated IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454). Injac had a winning position and a mate in two tactical motive, but she missed it in a huge time trouble and entered a lost rooks endgame. Kirtadze was precise in the simplified position with a huge edge and scored a victory. Replay: Anastasia Kirtadze – Teodora Injac : A missed mate in two

16-year-old WFM Bozhena Piddubna (UKR, 2145) started the tournament with a win against 10th-seeded IM Klaudia Kulon (POL, 2401). After the amazing European Women’s Chess Championship 2024 where she earned 166.4 elo points, Bozhena Piddubna opened the 2025 Championship in the same fashion! Klaudia Kulon had a big edge after the opening, but the Ukrainian youngster found a way for equalization, Kulon missed a mating net around her King in the endgame and fell into a mating trap without a way to escape.

Two-time European Women’s Chess Champion GM Natalia Zhukova (UKR, 2306) lost the first round against WFM Andrea Bochnickova (SVK, 2051). Zhukova had a passive position in the opening, and Bochnickova had safe play with huge space advantage. Trying to activate pieces, Zhukova lost the pawn and Andre Bochnickova converted a complex endgame into a win.

Among a few other surprising losses by the rating favourites, the first round saw 17 draws, including games by the top seeded IM Stavroula Tsolakidou (GRE, 2445), IM Dinara Wagner (GER, 2440), IM Lela Javakhishvili (GEO, 2429), GM Antoaneta Stefanova (BUL, 2426), IM Deimante Daulyte-Cornette (FRA, 2389) and others.

The second round starts tomorrow at 14:00 CET (15:00 local time) and brings interesting encounters. Live games with commentaries by GM Alojzije Jankovic and Dragana Nikolovska can be followed through the ECU TV platform or ECU YouTube channel. All photos by Jim Laga
