Top Chess Engine Championship Swiss 8 is now live – with record hardware boost and the highest average ELO in history. It is immediately followed by the TCEC Cup and the TCEC Leagues Season 28.

TCEC Swiss 8 will be daily live on the official website of TCEC, in video format on TCEC Twitch TV, a broadcast on our favorite game server Lichess, and news reports on Chessdom.

Lichess reaches 6 billion rated games

The free online chess server, and currently the best place to watch and play chess Lichess.org has reached the 6 billion games played mark. “6 billion rated standard games and counting! All available for download,” says Lichess in the celebratory tweet.

Lichess was founded in 2010 by French programmer Thibault Duplessis and since then has walked a long path. Lichess is ad-free and all the features are available for free, as the site is funded by donations from patrons. GM Shant Sargsyan wins Lichess titled arena

The March Lichess Blitz Titled Arena was won by GM Shant Sargsyan, a young Armenian super GM who is a former World U16 champion. In what was one of the closest Titled Arenas ever, Sargsyan was only really able to clinch the tournament in the final few minutes as he won two games back-to-back. Two other young and rising stars, GM Mahammad Muradli and Aravindh Chithambaram Veerappan, finished in second and third place, respectively. The anonymous GM BMWHero came in fourth while GM Vahap Sanal took fifth place.

Under 10 Arena points separated 1st place from 5th place. Thus, in the final few minutes, it was all a battle of nerves! Sargsyan had the best nerves as he amassed nine points out of his last four games, though he did get some cement to build his lead. Muradli, instead, only got seven points out of his last four games, while Veerappan got six, and BMWHero and Sanal only got three.

Carlsen wins Lichess Bullet Arena

Just a day after winning the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, Magnus Carlsen scores yet another title. Playing with his traditional online username GM DrNykterstein, Carlsen won the Lichess Bullet Arena, part of the Offerspill Online League. The World Chess Champion finished with 114 points (Lichess system) and win rate of 87% ahead of GM Sergei Zhigalko with 96 points and 77% win rate and GM Jonas Bjerre with 73 points and 66% win rate.

Carlsen had a difficult start of the tournament after a loss to GM Zhigalko. This was followed by shaky play – a win in game 2 vs agnivo2008 (2266), but another loss to FM Lucasran. This prompted Carlsen to start “berserk” play i.e. a Lichess feature that gives you more points, if you start with half of your time. Magnus stabilized his play and from game 10 he won 22 consecutive games!
